THE POP EXPOSE 'Vintage Video Games or Modern'?
Story by Mitchell Smith

Do you like vintage or modern video games?

Video games aren't what they used to be. I’m old enough to remember playing Atari at my cousins house, and I had an original NES. Oh those were the glorious days Super Mario and Duck Hunt. The hours of play to try and get to level 8 was so much different back then. There was no saving just play, play, play, and hopefully have siblings or friends to help you get to the end. I don’t have a working NES, but I do still have a SNES and a Sega Genesis. I’ve been playing some SNES lately and a couple of the games that I used to play a lot now seem impossible especially compared to some of the modern games to beat.

Mortal Kombat is one of those games you just have to play till the end. I tried playing it not long ago and It was very difficult to win. I was trying to figure out what I had once known. After several tries I got one win and tossed in the towel on that one for now. Next game I have been trying to beat and it's kicking my ass is NBA Jam, I used to play this a lot in my younger days, now I can’t win one game. Those pesky little CPU players keep stealing the ball. Zelda was kind of a pioneer even at the NES level. You were able to save your progress and play over several days weeks or months to beat the game.

Some other classic SNES games I love are Tetris, Madden, and MLB 1994. The modern WWII and Switch games are fun. Mario has some great games that are challenging and fun to play. WII sports was a big hit being able to use real actions to hit a ball with a bat or surf a wave, but I think the novelty wore off on that one. Mario Kart is fun and Zelda Breath of the Wild is fun, but I don’t get much time these days to play video games. When I do play its normally the SNES I go to, but do play Mario Kart, Super Mario, and Smash Brothers with the kids on the Switch. So I like the new games and I like the old games, just depends on the day. What are you guys in to?
