Outback's Outpost 'Topside' By Mitchell Smith!
Welcome to the Outpost. Today I’m checking out 1990 G.I.Joe Topside. 1990 was a pivotal year for me. I was starting high school and my Joe days were coming to an end. Topside was one of the last figures I received and probably one of the most underrated characters. Topside has a cool look to him and past NAVY characters like Cutter and Shipwreck have fixed hats, but Topside has a removable helmet.
Along with a cool rocket firing pack, his uniform was unique and full of detail. From the orange NAVY life vest to his yellow rope belt this is just and awesome figure. I don’t remember seeing Topside in any cartoons and I’m not sure if he made the comics or not. There are only the original and one modern figure of Topside, so maybe he came at a rough time to get any other versions.
A couple years ago I found a Topside at my local farmers market and was able to drill out his rusty screws and add the gear I still had from my original Topside to make a complete figure. I also used one of the Dollar General blue Shipwrecks to customize a modern figure and I’m going to swap out the 2020 Crankcase head to see how that works. I’m thinking it will look good. My brother had him. I think the sculpt looks great, and I should have bought him.
I think I would have bought him if he didn't have yellow paint where his eyes should be. Yellow eyed figures always made me scratch my head. On the fence with orange-eyed figures like Long-Range.

Yeah I have both of them, I agree the yellow eyes was a over sight. He probably should been more popular.

If I had a WHALE, I definitely would have got him to help Cutter patrol. I should have thought about just buying him and doing a headswap. Universal Footloose would probably have been great!

So when i was heavy into collecting as a kid like 5th through 9th grade, Topside was so hated at least by me. Because every Walmart around here had tons of him everywhere, and a lot of times it was the only character. He was the ultimate peg warmer. And, while i had pretty much every figure from 89-90 when i was a kid, i never bought topside. But as an adult, i have really grown to enjoy the Navy stuff a lot more. And, my opinion on the figure has totally changed. He goes really great on the Tactical Battle Platform with Cutter and Shipwreck.

Now I kinda want to go back and fix this dude's eyes, I'm pretty sure he's been inside my whale for like 10 years now. Probably time to check on him and re do his eyes and change the o ring.
