Issue 57 "STRANGE BEDFELLOWS"

Image

Background

Issue 56 had a lot of action, but even more intrigue, as Cobra worked hard to keep their secrets, and the Joes engaged in a chess game of tactics with them. Feel free to check out the review of Issue 56 in case you missed it. (You can catch up on other "Now You Know With YorktownJoe" reviews there as well!)

On to the issue

Image

The cover of this Issue and teases us that the Joes will be fighting side by side with Destro. Spoiler alert: Kind of true.

The issue begins with a mission briefing between Hawk, Lady Jaye and Flint. There is a discussion about the captured Terror Drome parts that Mainframe and Dial-Tone are examining in the room. The parts are linked to M.A.R.S. the Military Armaments Research Syndicate. This is Destro's "family business" that he discussed at the close of the last issue.

Image

They believe Destro has flown incognito, or maybe the reverse of that, back home to Scotland. Which of course, he has.

Image

Flint and Lady Jaye have orders to go to Scotland and check on the situation. They will be working with counterparts in Scotland. They meet up with Smythe-Barret who goes by the code name or nick name "Jingles." He has a driver named Sgt. Day who only goes by Sgt. Day.

Image

Destro is well ahead of them, but seems to be only then arriving at his own Castle.

Image

Although he is let in by the front guards, he finds there is another Destro holding a meeting with some of the senior staff and bodyguards of Destro. Although Mindbender has already done a bit of cloning, I have a hunch that one of these fellows is an impostor!! Destro is arrested as an impostor, and the other Destro remains in the Castle running the show. I think this would have been the time for everyone to take their masks off and the senior staff could verify who was who. But that would made for a much shorter issue, with less flair and drama. So one Destro is arrested, while cosplay Destro remains sipping tea.

Image

The recon team of Flint, Jingles, Jaye and Day notice the multiple Destro's and confirm the one being sent to jail is the one who flew from New York in the morning.

Image

Lady Jaye disguises herself as a Nun and goes to read gospel tracts to Destro in jail so he will repent of his ways. The officer has no interest in this, and promptly leaves them alone.

Image

Destro explains he isn't interested either, but then Lady Jaye pulls off the Nun costume , grabs Destro and hides them both under the mattress. Looks like something is about to happen!!

Image

They break Destro out of jail by actually blowing up the side wall. I'm not sure whose jurisdiction this falls under, but it would not seem to be on the up and up.

Image

They are concerned about the defenses, but Destro is convinced they have a way to get back into Castle Destro so he ca take back what is rightfully his.

Image

Larry Hama is very fond of vintage or historical aircraft. We have seen several issues featuring WWII aircraft. Here, the team "borrows" a WWII British glider from an R.A.F. museum.

Image

Lady Jaye expresses concerns about flying in a museum aircraft. Jingles has faith in British goods. Destro says most of the parts came from Canada, but his father was one of the contractors and the planes were built to last.

Image

Flint and Sgt. Day tow the giant glider and get it up to speed and it takes off with Destro piloting it.

Image

Flint and Sgt. Day try to assault the Castle in their jeep, while the other three glide in quietly just above the treetops. Destro's forces provide heavy return fire.

Image

Destro crashes the glider and Flint and Sgt. Day breach the out wall. There are chases and machine guns blazing all around.

Image

Destro, Lady Jaye, and Jingles fight their way up a staircase hoping their backup will arrive soon.

Image

At the top, they are stopped by blast doors. They don't have explosives to blow them up, but here comes something!!!!

Image

This is G.I. Joe. Please suspend disbelief that a speeding jeep like vehicle going up an ancient stone stairwell could achieve enough velocity to crash through a blast door designed to with-stand most conventional explosives. I'm pretty sure both Flint and Sgt. Day would be unavailable to suit up the next day and would be in the concussion tent. And their vehicle remains would be the punchline of an insurance commercial.

Image

Fake Destro has some secret plans and is trying to get away. Real Destro is having none of it.

Image

Once again, if they had taken off their masks, all of this could have been avoided.

Image

They crash down the stairs and all the fighting stops around them. The Scottish guards of Castle Destro gather to watch the fight and proclaim whoever wins is the real Destro. That's not actually logical, but I appreciate their loyalty to their master, and their confidence in his pugilistic ability.

Image

The impostor proclaims that all he has to do is win, and everything becomes his. Real Destro smashes his face against a stone pillar. I'm wondering if the impostor is now headed to the concussion tent??

And just who is this wise guy??

Image

Major Bludd!!

Image

Destro's guards take him into custody and ask if they should shoot Flint, Lady Jaye, Sgt. Day and Jingles. But Destro is honorable and he made a deal with them since they sprung him from jail and got his Castle back.

Flint doesn't seem to keen on Destro kissing Lady Jaye's gloved hand. But at least they get to live and leave.

-----

Issue 57 had a lot of action, but even more intrigue. Why was Major Bludd masquerading as Destro? What will the Joes do with the intel they gained? Time will tell!

Hope you enjoyed this review!

I always loved it when Destro worked with the joes, and people got to see he was not anything like Cobra Commander.
