Now You Know with YorktownJoe - Issue 56
Issue 56 "JUNGLE MOVES"

Image

Background

Issue 55 had a lot of action, including a daring rescue attempt by the Joe team, an escape from drowning for Destro and Cobra Commander, and the possible death of Snake-Eyes who appears to have gone out with a bang. Feel free to check out the review of Issue 55 in case you missed it. (You can catch up on other "Now You Know With YorktownJoe" reviews there as well!)

On to the issue

Image

The cover of this Issue is looks more like a panel from inside a comic than an artist cover. The proportions seem off, and Scarlett and Flint look surprised, as a giant Roadblock hovers over them while they they are being strafed by a Cobra chopper the size of a throwing dice (or is it die, singular?)

At the end of Issue 55, it looked like Snake-Eyes had been killed by Cobra in Sierra Gordo. But here on the first panel, we see he is merely knocked out. Cobras have him laid out across them for ease of carrying. Good to see America's greatest conversationalist is napping it out after a hard fight.

Seriously, I was glad to see he made it.

Image

The Baroness wants him transported back and ready for evacuation, as the situation in Sierra Gordo is degrading. Dr. Mindbender whispers to a Cobra Officer to take apart the brainwave scanner and prepare it for transport. He doesn't want it to fall into the wrong hands. And there is some foreshadowing that they may have some ulterior motives in their Terror Drome distribution plans.

Image

A Tomahawk lands on the USS FLAGG, bringing in wounded Stalker. He is bemoaning that he failed to cover himself and Snake-Eyes stayed behind to but them time for an extract. Scarlett comforts him, but is clearly concerned.

Image

Hawk asks Scarlett if she wants another shot at trying to rescue him, but I think only the readers know he is still alive. They have another mission first. And that takes precedence.

Image

Our man Grunt, errrr, Robert Graves the engineering student is a bit more mature than his fraternity or dorm roommates. And he looks at a picture of his friends before heading out for exercise. Someone yells "Hey, Grunt" at him, and he is instantly on edge.

Image

He didn't need to worry. It was a young woman named Lola who mentions he looks like ex Special Forces, but he tells her he worked in a motor pool. She was a helicopter mechanic. Grunt observes he never knew any helicopter mechanics that looked like her where he was stationed.

It looks like Grunt is going to transition to civilian life quite nicely. Good for him!

Image

Back in Sierra Gordo, Cobra is trying to evacuate as the Terror Drome is under assault from the Joes and the local counter revolutionaries.

Image

The locals compliment Dial-Tone and Recondo on their fighting. They were worried they were getting second rate replacements when Stalker's group pulled back.

Image

The Baroness and Dr. Mindbender continue the evacuation and have Snake-Eyes loaded and put aboard a Cobra helicopter. The Brainwave scanner is sent back via Firebat.

Image

Dr. Mindbender thinks Serpentor is going to congratulate him on capturing Snake-Eyes. But Serpentor is angry since this puts some of his long term plans in jeopardy.

Image

Tomax and Xamot wait until some of the Joes and locals are inside the Terror Drome, and then they try to blow it up with self-destruct charges placed around the Terror Drome. They don't want the parts analyzed, so they are "sterilizing" the scene.

Image

Thankfully, Trip-Wire cut the wires in time and is working on repositioning them so they can blow the Terror Drome with surgical precision, and nobody being blown up. Trip-Wire shows off mad EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) skills!

Image

They Joes tactical explosion breaks the Terror Drome into component pieces. Their plan is to get the pieces to the closest train tracks, load them up and ship them back State-side for analysis.

The Twins are very troubled.

Image

Scarlett notices that Cobra is watching them, and mentions they can use that to their advantage. Scarlett is very clever...

There are several pages where the Joes clear a path to the train tracks and use levers and engineering to get the pieces to the train track. They are moving them out of the battle zone, but Serpentor picks up the Twins and they chase the Joes on the train.

Just as the train is going over a bridge, the bridge and train are blown up and plunge into the river! Did the Joes on the train all die?!?!

Image

Wait, we see Flint is really pieces of hay almost like a makeshift scarecrow!

Image

Then we see the Joes elsewhere, sliding just a few pieces of the Terror Drome down for transport. Cobra thinks their plans are safe and some Joes are dead. But the Joes recognized the construction was 3 repeating pieces (very similar to the toy playset construction). So they only needed to recover 3 pieces for analysis.

Image

Flint comments that the good guys won for once. Scarlett replies they won't have won until they have Snake-Eyes back.

Image

The scene shifts to JFK airport in New York where security is reviewing a shadowed man's luggage. He has a steel mask in his suitcase. It's Destro!! And he's really unmasked!! Of course readers are only given shadowed profiles of Destro.

Image

Destro is travelling to Scotland, on business. Family business. We see he is wearing a suit, but also has his medallion. He appears to have shaved his head, and we still only catch glimpses of him.

The teaser says Destro will be involved in Issue 57 and the Snake-Eyes situation will be followed up on in the 3rd annual G.I.Joe Yearbook.

-----

Issue 56 had a lot of action, but even more intrigue, as Cobra worked hard to keep their secrets, and the Joes engaged in a chess game of tactics with them. Both know something the others do not. And both left feeling they had "won." Will Snake-Eyes be rescued? Will we find out more about Destro, or has he parted ways with Cobra? Time will tell!

Hope you enjoyed this review!

Tune in soon for Issue 57.

Sad to say i thought 'Lola' was pretty hot when i read this when i was a kid, ah cartoon crushes....lol. Also always thought Destro trying to get through the checkpoint with his mask, that nobody seems to realize belongs to a world renowned illegal arms dealer is awesome.

"Any laws against it?" is a great line!!

It would have been great if he had told them his wrist-rockets were party favors for his nephew's birthday party and that is why he needed a dozen of them in his carry-on...

It is more interesting that an international arms dealer (presumably worth many millions if not billions) would fly commercial. Wouldn't he have access to at least a time share of a Gulfstream private jet? No security checkpoints either... But it was humorous to set the table that way.
